Mommy on a Mission

As a Bus Driver on a Mission, my intention is to bring a little joy into other people’s lives. My summer gig driving the Hummingbird Pub bus on Galiano Island gives me the fantastic opportunity to meet the most amazing people from all over the world.

A couple of weeks ago I met a lovely family visiting from Texas.ย  My strongest memory was how charmingly open their youngest daughter, Emily, was. She wanted a hug from me and her mother was concerned that she not go and hug strangers. ย I jokingly quipped, โ€œWell, they don’t come any stranger than me!โ€

While on the bus, little Emily shook two maracas with undeterred enthusiasm. She obviously was having a great time playing and laughing with her sister. However, until I got this email from her mother, Heidi, I had no idea how our little book continues to inspire others to also ‘be on a mission’. This letter literally brought tears to my eyes.

Dear Tommy –

My family was on your bus a few weeks ago. We have 2 young daughters (1 and 3 years old) and our youngest, Emily, has Down syndrome. Emily was yelling and smiling ear to ear on the bus LOVING it! She loves music and she must have really gotten stuck on you.

You were out of books that night so you got Michele to bring you some so you could sign one for us. I got home and read it in 2 days and it was awesome! Totally inspired me to not only find more opportunities to acknowledge the people I run into daily and my husband and kids, but also to find ways to make everyday things more fun and silly and not take things so seriously–really important for raising kids when they are little and everything can be difficult some days, especially with a child with special needs.

Yesterday, little Emily saw your book sitting on my backpack and she grabbed it, started giggling, pointed to your picture and brought it to me so I knew I needed to email you and just thank you for the sunshine and light you brought to us through your stories and wisdom. I attached some pictures from on the bus and you can see how much fun little Emily had dancing along to the silliness.

Thanks for the lesson to take things a little lighter and to spread kindness. Now I’m a Mommy on a Mission ๐Ÿ™‚ Thank you for your wonderful book! See you next summer I hope.

Heidi Angel, Texas

An angel indeed! What was so remarkable about this family was that, despite the challenges of having a special needs child, the aura of love that surrounded them all was tangible. Both Heidi and her husband exuded real joy for their place in the world as caring, loving parents.

Her words, like sweet arrows to my heart, remind me that there are so many different ways we can each be on a mission to bring small moments of joy into the world. Are you up for being on a mission in your world? Love to hear.
